Outstanding young women from across the state of North Carolina are ready to compete in Miss North Carolina USA and Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2020 pageant at the High Point Theatre in Guilford County. The new titleholder will be crowned during the finals competition on Saturday, Nov 9 at 7:30 PM.
Madeline Delp of Asheville a wheelchair contestant who is among other 37 contestants to compete in Miss NC USA and she hopes to make history as if Madeline wins the crown, she'll become the first wheelchair contestant to win Miss NC USA and the first wheelchair contestant to compete in the national beauty contest Miss USA which will be held in the 2020 spring.
In 2004, Madeline stayed in a coma for weeks after a car crash as she and her mother were driving home when a truck hit them The accident crushed Delp's spine, leaving her paralyzed .
"I was about seven or eight when Miss Congeniality came out and I loved that movie. But as soon as I saw a glammed-up Sandra Bullock take the stage, I knew I could never do anything like that—beauty pageants weren’t for girls like me. And that was before the accident that left me in a wheelchair." Madeline said in an interview to Glamour.
The 25 years old has won the title of Miss Wheelchair USA in 2017 and she participated in the Miss North Carolina USA 2019 pageant and she placed on the top 15.
"Last year I entered Miss North Carolina USA and it was one of the most difficult and uncomfortable experiences that I've ever had. But it was also amazing. Picture being backstage with girls who are towering above you, each of them with legs for days. I felt so insecure. I truly had to overcome a lot of that to be able to go out on stage."Madeline said.
This year Madeline prepared very well for the pageant as she works with trainer to help her build her own confidence. Also she hired a designer to work on a gown that incorporates her wheelchair.
Madeline and the other contestants will compete in three equal phases : Swimsuit, Evening Gown, and Interview .
Cheslie Kryst of Charlotte Miss North Carolina USA 2019 -who has won Miss USA 2019 - will hand over her title to her successor at the end of the event.
